State of AI Search & Answer Engines 2026

AI answer engines are reshaping discovery, but classic search still dominates query volume. This report tracks AI Overview prevalence, chatbot market share, and referral-traffic growth using sourced data.

Has AI search replaced Google yet? Not in raw volume — Google still handles the overwhelming majority of global queries — but answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity are growing far faster and changing how informational queries get answered. The shift is most visible inside Google itself, where AI Overviews now appear on a large and rising share of searches.

Google still owns volume, but the format is changing

StatCounter and Similarweb data through early 2026 show Google retaining roughly 90% of the global search market, so the dominant search engine has not actually been displaced. What has changed is the result format. Semrush tracking found Google AI Overviews jumped from about 6.5% of monitored queries in January 2025 to a peak near 25% in mid-2025 before Google recalibrated downward. The practical effect is that a growing slice of informational searches now resolves to a synthesized answer rather than a list of ten blue links. That compresses the surface area where traditional SEO clicks used to happen.

Standalone answer engines are small but fast

Dedicated AI chat and answer tools remain a minority of total query volume, but their growth curves are steep. OpenAI reported ChatGPT crossing 800 million weekly active users in late 2025 and 900 million by February 2026, while Perplexity reached an $18 billion valuation in mid-2025 on the strength of its search-style product. Among AI chatbots specifically, ChatGPT captures the large majority of visits, with Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Claude splitting the remainder. The category is consolidating around a few brands rather than fragmenting.

Referral traffic from AI is real and high-intent

Beyond on-platform answers, AI tools increasingly send users to publisher sites. Similarweb measured AI platforms generating over a billion referral visits in a single month of 2025, a triple-digit percentage increase year over year, with ChatGPT driving roughly half of that flow. Independent studies also report that AI-referred visitors spend meaningfully longer on destination pages than typical organic-search visitors. For publishers, that suggests AI referrals are lower in count but higher in engagement, which reframes the value of being cited inside an answer.

What this means for visibility strategy

The data points to a two-track future rather than a clean replacement. Sites still need classic search performance for the bulk of traffic, but they also need to be structured so answer engines can extract and cite them. That favors clear definitional content, structured data, and authoritative sourcing — the same signals AI systems use to pick what to quote. Brands that ignore answer-engine optimization risk losing the high-intent referral segment even while their raw Google rankings hold steady.
